Chatham Dockyard.

Notes:

10 Jul 1841, Mr. Laird, assistant of Chatham Dockyard, is appointed builder at Bombay ; and Mr. Wilcox. of Portsmouth dockyard, is appointed assistant at Chatham. Mr. Fincham came to this yard as a foreman.

27 Aug 1841, Captain Superintendent W. H. Shirreff, at Deptford dockyard, has been appointed Captain Superintendent at Chatham Dockyard in place of Captain Superintendent J. Clavell, removed to Greenwich Hospital, vice Larkan, deceased.

11 Oct 1861 Increase of the Salary of Master Attendant of Chatham Dock Yard to £600.

11 Feb 1871 following a representation by the SPCA, later the RSPCA, the 40 horses hired from a contractor for work in the dockyard at a rate of 1s. 10½d. per day, were declared to be unfit for work.

27 Feb 1871 a tramway is being built the length of the Dockyard and will include St. Mary's Island, and branches to the various workshops, to facilitate the movement of heavy materials.

5 Apr 1871 in addition to Good Friday and Easter Sunday may take the Saturday as a holiday, but will have to work the time.

24 Dec 1891, the dockyard will close this afternoon till Monday, for the Christmas holidays. As Bank Holidays are not kept in the Government dockyards, the time has been accrued by workers.
