29 Nov 1807 Sir W S Smith's squadron leaves of the coast of Portugal with a Portuguese fleet under Vice-admiral don Manuel d'Acunha Sottomayor, to escort the Portuguese court and about 18,000 Portuguese inhabitants to Brazil. One 74, the Vasco-de-Gamo, under repair and nearly ready, and another 74 and 64, and five frigates and corvettes, that were unserviceable did not accompany the fleet.
