Passenger Lists

A correspondent calls our attention to the fact that a list of the passengers by the Victoria was published by the People's Advocate on Saturday last, and had not up to yesterday appeared in the Herald. We were formerly in the habit of publishing lists of passengers before the vessels cleared at the Customs, but it was pointed out to us by several agents and others interested that this practice was open to much abuse, as unscrupulous people, in order to make parties believe their vessels were about to sail might, and often did, lodge at the Water Police Office lists of persons about to sail in their ships many days before they were ready to leave the port, and put down names of persons who were not going with them, to pretend that their ships were full. In consequence of these complaints the Shipping Reporter was directed to publish no lists of passengers until vessels are actually cleared at the Customs, by which means we obtain a list which is sure to be very nearly correct, which is far from the case when the other course is adopted.- Morning Herald.
