A Sample of RN Ship Movements 1844,


H.M.S. " VINDICTIVE."- Portsmouth, July 28. -The Vindictive, 50, Captain J. Toup Nicolas, C.B., arrived on Friday morning from Valparaiso with a freight, estimated at a million and a quarter of dollars, on merchants' account. She left Valparaiso on the 1st of May, and arrived at Rio on the 10th of June following, which she left on the 14th.

The Carysford, 36, Captain the Right Hon. Lord George Paulet, and the Salamander steam-sloop, Commander A. S. Hamond, were at Valparaiso when the Vindictive sailed for Rio.

The Dublin, 50, Captain J. Tucker, flag of Rear-Admiral Thomas, Commander-in-Chief in the Pacific, was expected at Valparaiso from a cruize.

The Growler, steam-sloop, Commander C. H. M. Buckle ; Cockatrice, 6, Lieutenant-Commander Justus Oxenham ; Dolphin, 3, Lieutenant-Commander William O'Brien Hoare; and the Express, 6, brig, were the only vessels at Rio on the 14th ult.

The Vindictive continues to maintain all her superiority as it fast sailer. She has beaten every ship that has endeavoured to compete with here. As she was weighing anchor prior to leaving Valparaiso, the Cormorant. steam-sloop,. Commander G. T. Gordon, was bearing up, with Mr. Pritchard, Her Britannic Majesty's Consul for the Society Islands; on board. He had been arrested and confined by the French powers at the islands, without the benefit of Judge or Jury. He, was driven from his home, and compelled to take refuge on board the Cormorant after she got outside the harbour, Without wife, property; or clothes; other than he then had on, and came to England in the Vindictive. The Vindictive was inspected by the Commander-in-Chief on Friday, and came into harbour yesterday to be paid off.-
