1908 - Bread Making Allowances

1908 10 06
And whereas Your Majesty was graciously pleased by Your Order in Council dated 9 September, 1907, to direct that when the exigencies of the Service render it necessary for bread to be baked by the cooks in the galleys of Your Majesty's ships, extra pay shall be allowed to the cooking staff for undertaking bread-making in addition to their ordinary duties, according to the scale set forth in the Schedule attached hereto :

And whereas we are of opinion that it is desirable to extend these allowances to other persons than those now entitled, when their employment on bread-making is necessary :

We beg leave humbly to recommend that Your Majesty may be graciously pleased by Your Order in Council to sanction the further issue of these allowances under the following conditions:

  1. Any rating who may be appointed by his Commanding Officer to assist the ship's Cook on days when bread is baked to receive the allowance laid down for "other Cook ratings."
  2. Ratings employed in the bakeries of Your Majesty's ship's fitted therewith to receive at the discretion of their Commanding Officer, the allowances specified in the Schedule attached hereto, when they are engaged, in addition to their ordinary duties, in making bread for issue to ships without bakeries ; the rates payable in such cases to be calculated on the full allowance for the ship's company to whom the bread is issued, but no payment to be made unless the extra, quantity baked exceeds 120 pounds.
  3. Provided that in either case the number of persons in receipt of bread-making allowances does not exceed the number of cook ratings allowed to the ship to which the bread is issued:

The Lords Commissioners of Your Majesty's Treasury have signified their concurrence in these proposals.
