Number of Carpenters Increased

Admiralty Order in Council No. 76.

8 March, 1895.

Whereas by Your Majesty's Order in Council of the 12th July 1887, the establishment of Chief Carpenters and Carpenters Royal Navy was fixed at the following numbers:-

Chief Carpenters 14
Carpenters 190

And whereas we are of opinion that, owing to the increase of Your Majesty's Fleet, more of these Officers are required.

We beg leave therefore to recommend that Your Majesty may be graciously pleased by Your Order in Council, to authorise us to increase the lists of these Officers to the following numbers : -

Chief Carpenters 17
Carpenters 197

The Lords Commissioners of Your Majesty's Treasury have signified their concurrence in this proposal.

Senior Carpenter - gratuity for docking and undocking a ship
And whereas it occasionally happens that it is necessary to dock one of Your Majesty's ships in a Colonial or private dock :

And whereas we consider it desirable that the extra work and responsibility which devolves on the Senior Carpenter rank or rating of a ship on such occasion should be recognized by the grant of a gratuity for each successful docking or undocking not exceeding one pound for each operation.

Change of Title for Carpenters to Shipwright - Increase in their Pay
At the Court at Buckingham Palace, the 12th February, 1918.

Present, The King's Most Excellent Majesty in Council.

Whereas there was this day read at the Board a Memorial from the Right Honourable the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, dated the 8th February, 1918, in the words following, viz. :-

Whereas by Section 3 of the Naval and Marine Pay acid Pensions Act, 1865, etc.

And whereas we consider that the scales of pay for Carpenter Lieutenants and Chief Carpenters should be improved; and that the titles of Carpenter Lieutenant, Chief Carpenter, and Carpenter, which no longer correspond to the duties carried out by those Officers, should be revised :

We beg leave humbly to recommend that Your Majesty may be graciously pleased, by Your Order in Council, to approve of the scales of pay for Carpenter Lieutenants, and Chief Carpenters, being increased by 1s. a day with effect from the 14th day of December, 1917, and of the titles being amended as follows:

    Present Title - New Title ;
  • Carpenter Lieutenant - Shipwright Lieutenant ;
  • Chief Carpenter - Commissioned Ship-wright ;
  • Carpenter - Warrant Shipwright.

The Lords Commissioners of Your Majesty's Treasury have signified their concurrence in this proposal.

His Majesty, having taken the said Memorial into consideration, was pleased, by and with the advice of His Privy Council, to approve of what is therein proposed.

And the Right Honourable the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty are to give the necessary directions herein accordingly.
