Establishment of Second Ship's Steward


(Equivalent to a Petty Officer rating)

At the Court at Saint James's, the 13th day of October, 1910.

Present, The King's Most Excellent Majesty in Council.

Whereas there was this day read at the Board a Memorial from the Right Honourable the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, dated the eleventh day of August, one thousand nine hundred and ten, in the words following, viz.:-

Whereas by Section three of the Naval and Marine Pay and Pensions Act, 1865, etc.

And whereas the Ship's Steward Class differs from other Classes of ratings in Your Majesty's Navy in that it possesses no intermediate Petty Officer rating between the Leading Seaman rating of Ship's Steward's Assistant and the Chief Petty Officer rating of Ship's Steward :

And whereas we consider it desirable that a Petty Officer rating should be established for the Ship's Steward Class, and that the scale of pay of this Class should be assimilated generally to the rates of pay now obtaining in other Classes of Naval ratings :

We beg leave humbly to recommend that Your Majesty may be graciously pleased, by Your Order in Council, to sanction the provisions set forth in the annexed Schedule, to be introduced gradually with due regard to existing rights, power being reserved to us to associate payment of the new rates of pay with such conditions as we may deem necessary :

The Lords Commissioners of Your Majesty*s Treasury have signified their concurrence in these proposals.

Schedule

  1. A Petty Officer rating to be established for the Ship's Steward Class, with the title of Second Ship's Steward.
  2. The scale of pay and allowances of the Ship's Steward Class to be as follows, viz.:-

* Store allowance to be payable to Ship's Steward's Assistants in special cases, under the conditions laid down in clauses 8 and 9, Article 1448, of the King's Regulations and Admiralty Instructions.

His Majesty, having taken the said Memorial into consideration, was pleased, by and with the advice of His Privy Council, to approve of what is therein proposed. And the Right Honourable the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty are to give the necessary directions herein accordingly.
