Portland's Population

Portland Urban District has an area of 2,897 acres, of which three acres are inland water

Its population at the 1901 census was 15,199.

Ten years previous it was only 9,443.

At the middle of 1904 Dr. T. Howard estimated the population at 13,500.

The Island in 1901 had 1,743 inhabited houses, 34 in occupation for business purposes, only 83 empty, and 28 building.

The figures as to population and houses include Castletown, Chiswell, Easton, Fortune's Well, Grove, Southwell, Weston, and Wakeham.

There were 10,780 males and only 4,419 female.

In 1891 there were only 5,970 males and 3,473 females.

The males increased in 10 years by 4,810 and the females by 946.

The census report adds the following footnote : " The increase in the population of Portland civil parish is mainly attributable to the construction of the Breakwater and to other Government works which were in progress at the date of the census. A considerable proportion of the population of this parish was enumerated in the Portland Convict Prison and in the Verne Citadel Barracks and ships of the Royal Navy.

There were 707 prisoners in Portland Convict Prison on census night.

The number of officers and their families was returned at 615 (males, 299 ; females, 316).

Portland's military and naval population on census night was distributed as follows :

Portland Castle, 1 officer and two servants;

Verne Citadel Barracks, 10 officers, 410 non. non-coms and men and 155 other inmates, families and Etc. ;

Breakwater fort, 15 men ; Royal Naval Hospital, 1 officer 58 non-coms. and men, 5 other inmates ;

H.M. ships,

Agincourt 6 officers, 437 warrant officers, men and boys, 3 other inmates ;

Alexandra, 18 officers, 613 others ;

Anson, 16 officers and 462 ;

Boscawen 5 officers and 594 ;

Dolphin, 3 and 56 ;

Howe 16 and 519 ;

Martin 3 and 124 ;

May (Coastguard cruiser), 4 ;

Minotaur, 3 and 562 ;

Seaflower 2 and 126 ;

Trafalgar, 183 and 537;

Wanderer, 3 and 155.

This makes a total military strength of 593 and a naval strength of 4,439.

In Portland harbour there were 22 British vessels carrying 182 persons and four foreign ships with 68 persons.

The civil population of Portland in 1901 was 9,278. Portland on census night had 2 persons 90 years of age, 16 who were 85, 34 who were 80, 102 who were 70, and 284 who were 60. The largest number of any given age was 1,850 who were 21 years old.

ECCLESIASTICAL PARISHES

St. Andrews and St. George, 3,545 population, 701 inhabited houses.

St. John's, 9,004 population, 796 inhabited houses.

St. Peters, 2,650 population 246 inhabited houses. (Census 1901)

THE HOUSING PROBLEM

Out of 2,011 tenements in Portland there were 710 with less than 5 rooms.

Of 49 tenements with only one room each 13 were occupied by one person, 25 by 2 person, 7 by 3 persons, 3 by 4 persons, and 1 by no less than 7 persons.

Of 42 tenements with two rooms each 20 had one person living in each of them, 10 had two each, 6 had 3, 4 had 4, 1 had 7, and 1 had 10.

Out of 36 houses with 3 rooms each 3 were occupied by 1 person each, 7 by 2, 10 by 3,3 by 4, 6 by 5, 3 by 6, 1 by 7 7, and 3 by 8.

Sixty-five tenements had 4 rooms each 2 were occupied by 1 person each, 18, by 2, 8 by 3, 10 by 4, 5 by 5, 7 by 6, 4 by 7, and 1 by 10.

Portland's Population

1831, 2,670. In 1835 there were 581 house.

1871, 9,130. Civil population, 6,823 ; convicts and prison official., 1,608 ; soldiers and families, 699.

1881, 10,001. Including 35 in the Naval Hospital, 361 in the Verne Citadel, 1,620 in the Convict Prison, and 845 on board Ships (550 Navy).

1891, 9,443.
